STATEMENT

For the past 30 years, I have been translating my experience as a queer femme into an aesthetic form. My work breaks media-specific orthodoxies. By blurring boundaries between painting, collage and photography, I upend normative categories and make space for expanded possibilities of meaning and being.

My work is an iterative and associative process, where one thing turns into another. A thread ties interdisciplinary approaches together. I have many different approaches to making work. Sometimes I start with a drawing. I might use the drawing as a negative in the color darkroom. Test strips of varying exposures and color temperatures are collaged into new compositions.

Most recently, I have taken my photographs of my partner, who was a legendary drag performer in the 90’s, and archival pictures of my daughter collaged together with images of flowers.

I am interested in exploring the contrasts between photography and painting. To explore the possibility of scale and movement, the female form and the space we inhabit.

My work mediates desire and trauma through associations to color, gesture and form. The process allows me to navigate my way through psychic pain, finally arriving at reparative erotics through beauty and pleasure.
